Why Sourdough?

Welcome to our homemade sourdough bread page! We're excited to share the wonders of sourdough bread and its numerous benefits. Let's dive in and discover what makes this ancient bread so special.

What is Homemade Sourdough Bread?

Homemade sourdough bread is a traditional type of bread that is naturally fermented using a sourdough starter. Unlike commercial yeast bread, sourdough relies on wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria present in the air and flour to leaven the dough. This natural fermentation process imparts a distinct tangy flavor and unique texture to the bread.

Benefits of Homemade Sourdough Bread:

Improved Digestibility:

The fermentation process breaks down complex carbohydrates and proteins, making the nutrients more easily absorbed by the body. This can lead to better digestion and reduced digestive discomfort for many individuals.

Gentler on Blood Sugar:

Sourdough bread has a lower glycemic index compared to regular bread. This means it leads to a slower and more gradual rise in blood sugar levels, providing sustained energy and avoiding sudden spikes.

Increased Nutrient Availability:

The fermentation process enhances nutrient availability in the bread by breaking down phytic acid, a compound that can interfere with nutrient absorption. As a result, important minerals like iron, zinc, and magnesium become more bioavailable to your body.

Richer in Prebiotics and Probiotics:

Sourdough fermentation promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria and yeasts, increasing the presence of prebiotics and probiotics in the bread. These promote a healthy gut microbiome and contribute to overall gut health.

Distinctive Flavor and Texture:

Sourdough bread offers a unique tangy taste, complex aroma, and chewy texture that is highly satisfying. Its rich flavors compliment a variety of toppings, from sweet to savory.

Meet bubs, our starter!

*Made in June 2021, our starter is used in all our breads and is the star of the show! She’s fed daily with organic flour and filtered water.*

Our Process!

We use a small batch, long ferment process to make our bread. All in all, it takes about three days to make one loaf, from start to finish!

All our flours used are organic, and we use organic and local ingredients where possible for our inclusions!
